Should I move to San Francisco?
Current location:
Lovely south bay suburbia. 15 minutes to work.

Pros of moving to SF:
- restaurants
- small-band concerts
- more young people to meet
- lovely views from apartment
- great walks, parks, biking

Cons:
- car parking costs $300, plus owning, insuring and maintaining a car that I hardly use is like wasting another $700. Ideally city-dwellers should not own cars, but I can't afford to take the hit of selling the car right now.
- rent is an additional $300-$500
- less room to live and less privacy with a roommate (unless I spend another $500 for a house or a 3 bdrm). I hate sharing bedroom walls.
- some furniture just won't fit
- no in-apartment laundry unless I pay more money
- no independent house unless I pay lots more money
- my visitors can't park and will have their cars broken into
- commute to work: 3 hours wasted a day (but maybe I can take up reading, but I can also do that without moving to SF)
- no more loud home theatre fun
- I can't do much on the weekdays because the city will be asleep by the time I get home from work. Will I even wake up early on the weekends to enjoy the city life?

I think you also need to factor in your current working hours, which start a bit later in the morning. If you wanted to keep those hours, you'd have to get up much earlier to factor in the commute (regardless of whether or not you take up reading); how late would you end up getting home as a result?

Personally, I think a 3-hour commute is awful. Then again, I think a half-hour commute is awful. I think you'd do better to get a weekend place, or something like that. Or make good friends with someone who lives in the city with whom you could stay on certain weekends.

Plus, what would you do if your car were broken into? (I am tempted to use three question marks to display just how much I know this would devastate you!)

I would certainly have to get my act together and live a more disciplined work-life. I'd catch the company shuttle at some fixed early time in the morning and I'd have to make sure to catch the last one home (I'm so sure I'll miss the last shuttle at least once). This also means, less time hanging out at work playing pool or ping-pong with [info]dushai and other cool people.

I'm glad you can work from home and even avoid the 30 minutes of driving that I have to do now :) I maybe could work from home 3 days a week when I don't have meetings etc, but I don't think I would given how 90% of my social life is at work.

I like the idea of a weekend apartment. Two friends of mine at work who are dating each other used to do that (live near work during the week, live in the city on the weekends). I needs to find me a bella from the city.

Oh I would never let my car be broken into! Which is why I factored in the extra $$$ for parking in a garage (my car doesn't deserve to sleep on the street).
